The winter weather isn't letting up for much of the country as several states across the nation usher in the new year with snow, ice, and rain.
States out west are recovering after being hit by a major winter storm system. Main highways were shut down and flights cancelled in New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming.
Even though most of these states are accustomed to winter weather, this storm system caught many people off guard.
"We knew the weather was going to be bad, but we didn't think it was going to be that bad," one person said.
Near Fargo, N.D., whiteout conditions even made drivers who are used to driving in harsh weather lose control, causing a 100 car pile-up on Interstate 94.
Snow fall continues across Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Forecasters say the storm will move into the upper plains and Mississippi valley Friday.
