Science-fiction blockbuster Avatar and the war-on-terror thriller The Hurt Locker lead the 82nd Annual Academy Awards with nine nominations each.

Creators of The Blind Side are also celebrating an unexpected nomination for Best Picture.

Sandra Bullock has been nominated for a Best Actress Academy Award for her role in the film, a real-life rags to riches story of Baltimore Raven offensive lineman Michael Oher.

Bullock plays Leanne Tuohy the real-life Memphis, Tenn. mother who adopted Oher when he was homeless teenager.

The teen went on to become a college football star at the University of Mississippi and a first-round draft pick in the NFL. He now plays for the Baltimore Ravens.
