The social networking site is about to hit a record 500 million users, making it the largest information network on the Internet. The number of Facebook users now equals the size of the population of the U.S., Japan and Germany combined.

The milestone will be celebrated by a public relations campaign that will share stories of how Facebook has affected various users' lives.

Hollywood wants to cash in on the website as well. Sony Pictures will release a movie on Facebook's origins in October.
