Jason Picaro was told he would never walk again. But over the weekend, he surprised his doctors, family and friends by undertaking a different type of adventure. One in which be would not have to use his legs.
Four years ago, after the 30-year-old had returned home from Iraq, a drunk driver slammed into his car while Picaro was driving on the interstate. The accident left him paralyzed from the waist down.
Picaro's determination and training with a dive instructor gave him the opportunity to do something extraordinary. He went on a scuba diving trip off the Florida coast.
"They all think I'm crazy," Picaro said. "I am horse of a different color, that's their thought. What I'm going to do is what I'm going to do. I am not going to let anything stop me."
"Just being underwater, feeling free it's an amazing experience," he said.
Picaro's dive instructor, who specializes in helping paraplegics, says he hopes Picaro's experience will be an inspiration to others who may also be physically limited in some way.
