'The Last Song,' the new movie in theatres now starring Greg Kinnear and Miley Cyrus, is based on a best-selling novel by author Nicholas Sparks about a strained relationship between a teenage girl and her father.

Sparks recently spoke with CBN News about the movie and his faith that inspires him in his work. The best-selling author said that when he sat down to write 'The Last Song,' he actually wrote on the screenplay first, instead of the book.

"This was a new experience for everyone and it's funny, it's true I did, but really the first step was the idea," Sparks explained. "Once I had the idea, I said, 'Okay, now I have this...' It didn't matter to me which one I wrote first. They needed the movie. Miley had a tight schedule and they wanted to film in the summer."

Sparks actually wrote screenplay for the 'The Last Song' with Miley Cyrus in mind.

"I was leaning toward doing a teenage story about a teen-age girl. It'd been a long time since I'd written one," Sparks replied. "That's where my thoughts were. It was funny because that's when I got a phone call from Offspring Entertainment, saying 'Miley loved 'A Walk to Remember' and - do you have anything laying around?'"

"And I said, 'No..but it's really funny you should mention that.' So I spent the rest of the summer coming up with a story. Talked to Miley, talked to Disney, presented it to Miley and then here we are," he said.

The movie has many themes including faith, family, forgiveness and is set on the water -- just like Sparks' home in New Bern, N.C.

It is about a girl who spends the summer with her estranged father, but would much rather be home in New York. He tries to reconnect with her through the only thing they have in common -- music.

"The story of 'The Last Song' is about this girl Ronnie Miller," Cyrus said explained about the character she plays. "Her parents have been separated and she's kind of started going down the wrong path, wrong choice of friends, and not the best choices."

"Basically, the story helps her find her way to being happier in general and just a better person by faith and love and friendships," she said.

Greg Kinnear who plays Cyrus' father said he was impressed with his young co-star.

"She has quite a few fans that are hoarding the location at all time. It's kind of nice to watch," Kinnear said. "This is an interesting movie for her, She's 16! Ah, she's 16...and obviously this role she's playing asks a lot of her."

'The Last Song' is Sparks' fifteenth novel and the sixth film made from his novels. Like his other novels, 'The Last Song' includes characters who are searching for God.

"It's appropriate to the stories I write," Sparks added. "I write about small towns. I write about little small southern towns. And it's funny, if you moved to my hometown here, the first question they ask is 'Where are you going to go to church?' And for me, it's central to my own life. And I put it in and say 'Here's my novel, hope you like it.'"
