Beauty salons could hold the answer to helping clean up the oil spill along the Gulf Coast.
The nonprofit group Matter of Trust is collecting hair from salons across the country to make oil-absorbing booms by stuffing human and pet hair into nylon stockings.
The group says the contraptions will act like a sponge to soak up the oil.
Several salons across the nation have already responded, packing every bit of hair they can into trash bags.
"Every time they see me throwing hair in my little bag, now they're going to see a good cause," hairstylist Andrea Sorrenti said.
"Just like hair absorbs shampoo and whatever [else], it will also absorb oil," stylist Amy Myles added.
Hanes is also donating 50,000 pairs of pantyhose to help make the booms.
More than 3,500 suggestions have come in by telephone and email on how to soak up the gushing oil. Aside from hair, corks and pillows are among the many recommendations.
Matter of Trust said thousands of pounds of hair, fur and nylons have come in from the U.S., Canada, Brazil, France, and the United Kingdom.
