A new report from Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., found that the federal government sent out more than $1 billion in government benefits over the last ten years -- to about 250,000 dead people.
"Nothing represents the stupidity of wasteful Washington spending more than directing a billion taxpayer dollars to the deceased. This practice is disgraceful and, in many cases, robs the living of promised benefits," Coburn said in a statement.
The report found that the dead received all kinds of government payments.
- The Social Security Administration sent $40 million in benefits and $18 million in stimulus money.
- Medicare released $92 million for supplies prescribed by dead doctors and $8 million more in supplies for dead patients.
- Housing and Urban Development sent out $15 million to households with at least one dead person.
Since the 1990's, the U.S. Agriculture Department gave out more than $1 billion in subsidies to dead farmers.
