Jack and Jeanette Parten of Tyler, Texas are celebrating their 69th wedding anniversary. Their love story began more than 70 years ago in a rather unusual setting: Huntsville Penitentiary.
"We weren't inmates," 91-year-old Jeanette said, explaining that the two were students at Sam Houston State University. "We went up there to look at a program there," she told Tyler's KLTV.
Jack said he was listening to a radio program that was hosted inside the prison walls when Jeanette caught his eye. He said it was love at first sight.
"I just felt like someone was staring at me," Jeanette recalled. "I'd turn around and he'd turn around."
Jeanette split from her boyfriend at the time and began dating Jack.
"We didn't have any money," she said. "Every now and then we'd have enough money to buy a foot long hot dog and we'd split it. If we had a lot of money, we'd go to the 25 cent movie."
The couple says they had to elope because they barely had enough money to pay for their marriage license.
Jack and Jeanette say it has been their love that's gotten them through the tough times.
"We can take it...whatever 'it' is," Jeanette said.
Till this day, the Partens enjoy watching football together. Their favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys.
