What remains of Lighthouse Christian School will be torn down and reconstructed from scratch.
An estimated 1,500 volunteers from all over Nashville, Tenn. are helping with the project. One of those volunteers is Leigh Ann Touhy, the woman who inspired actress Sandra Bullock's character in the nationally acclaimed film "The Blind Side."
"Being in Memphis, we saw it all, we literally saw this preschool float down," Touhy told Nashville's WKRN.
"I remember watching it on the news and going, 'Oh my gosh,'" she said. "So now to come and get to be a part of it, it is really even more meaningful because I actually lived it up close and personal."
ABC has partnered with LP Building Products and Hardaway Construction Corp to rebuild the facility.
"We didn't have file cabinets, everything destroyed," school teacher Fay Mayes recalled. "Now we're going to have a new beginning; it's going be a good year."
"Today, I have so much joy," she said. "I just want to give God all the glory for providing new building with Extreme Makeover."
"Now we're going to have a place where we can teach them for a long, long time," teacher Rachel Demaree said. "The children are going to have a place to come to. I'm really thankful."
Construction is expected to be completed by Sept. 18.
