Moms Claim Cupcakes Help Induce Labor

A bakery in Charlottesville, Va. is not only attracting sugar lovers because of their cupcakes. It's also attracting another type of clientele -- overdue moms.

"I just literally had my daughter. I was in the hospital, I think my daughter was five-hours-old, and I called the cupcake shop and I was like -- it worked," new mom Shannon Conklin said.

Each confection at Cappellino's Crazy Cakes may look like just another sugary baked good. But the lemon drop cakes at a Charlottesville bakery are also nicknamed "labor inducers."

It seems that several overdue mothers started having contractions immediately after eating the cupcakes. Now, word is spreading and OBGYN's around town are prescribing the batter.

"I just mix it with a little bit more love. And I zest it with a little bit more love," bakery owner Dotty Cappellino explained.

"I was five days overdue and we came back downtown and I got one and it worked," Christina Shoup said.

"Within half an hour, I started having contractions," Lori Lawson, another new mother, confessed.

So far, the shop claims eating the cupcakes have helped overdue mothers in 19 births.
