A Muslim Iraqi immigrant has been convicted by a Maricopa County, Ariz. jury of second-degree murder for running over and killing his 20-year-old daughter and her friend.
Approximately two years ago, Faleh Almaleki crushed his daughter Noor Faleh Almaleki with his Jeep Cherokee because she dishonored his family by becoming "too Westernized," the prosecution said.
Authorities say the 50-year-old was angry because she refused an arranged marriage, went to college, and had a boyfriend he did not approve. Prosecutors called the Oct. 20, 2009 crime an honor killing.
"We the jury duly in paneled and sworn in the above entitled action upon our oaths do find the defendant Faleh Hassan Almaleki as to count one second degree murder a domestic violence offence as to victim Noor Almaleki guilty," the jury verdict read.
The Iraqi native was also found guilty of aggravated assault for seriously injuring the mother of Noor's fiancé and for fleeing the scene of the crime.
Almaleki, who could receive up to 22 years in prison for the murder charge alone, is scheduled to be sentenced on Wednesday.
