With Mardi Gras less than a month away, one Louisiana bakery is making sure U.S. troops serving overseas will have a little taste of home to celebrate.
Randazzo's Bakery, located just outside of New Orleans in Slidell, La., has teamed up with Operation We Care to send 500 king cakes to Afghanistan and Iraq.
"It's just joy. It just makes you feel so good knowing that when they get that package, they are going to know that somebody who doesn't know them are thinking of them," the bakery's owner Tricia Randazzo-Zornes said.
Instead of the traditional gold, green and purple, the Mardi Gras treats will be decorated with red, white and blue sprinkles.
In addition, each cake will be packed in a box decorated by an elementary school child and will come with a special letter of appreciation.
"They need to know we love and support them, and this is how we do that," Operation We Care's Colleen Smith said. "We send them a little something every month to let them know."
