A controversial Kansas church known for protesting at military funerals has called off one of its demonstrations at the funeral of a victim of the recent Tucson, Ariz., shooting.
Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokeswoman for Westboro Baptist Church, said the planned picket at the funeral of 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green is cancelled.
Green was born on Sept. 11, 2001, and killed in the Jan. 8 shooting rampage that critically injured Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
Phelps-Roper said the church agreed to avoid Thursday's funeral in exchange for live interviews on two radio stations in Canada and Arizona.
"It's always a question of where can you put the words in the most ears," she said.
Church members still plan to protest Friday's funeral of U.S. District Judge John Roll, who was also killed in the shooting.
Tuesday, Arizona lawmakers passed legislation banning protests within 300 feet of a funeral and an hour before or after a funeral.
Westboro Baptist has protested at high profile funerals for years in order to promote its radical stance against homosexuality.
