The imam behind the Ground Zero mosque started a national speaking tour over the weekend in an effort to "depoliticize" the Muslim faith and encourage dialogue with Americans.
Feisal Abdul Rauf said his tour is to promote "interfaith understanding," and show that Islam is "not an alien religion."
"What we do here in America, brothers and sisters, is watched by the world," Rauf said Sunday during a diversity forum in Detroit. "We have to find ways to make sure who we are and what we represent becomes a recipe for healing."
About 400 people attended the event. Detroit is home to the nations largest Muslim population.
