Twenty-two year old Jared Loughner's alleged attempt to assassinate Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has shocked lawmakers and united the country in support of those affected.

The suspected shooter opened fire at a public event outside a Tucson, Ariz., grocery store Jan. 8. Six people were killed in the rampage, including a federal judge and a 9-year-old born on Sept. 11, 2001.

Giffords, a well-respected Democrat who'd just started her third term in Congress, was targeted. She remains in critical condition.
