Fla. Drivers Go to Illegal Extremes to Save Cash

Some Florida motorists are taking extreme measures to save a little money.

State authorities say many motorists are skipping out on paying tolls - even though it could result in a fine of over a $1,000.

"Maybe it's economic reasons. Maybe they just don't want to pay," Florida Highway Patrol Sgt. Mark Wysocky told the Sun Sentinel. "It's quicker than sitting in line to go through the toll plaza."

One motorcyclist covered his license plates with his feet.  Another man, riding in the trunk of a car, blocked the vehicle's plate numbers with his hand.

"That's pretty drastic if you're hanging out of a trunk to cover your tag," Wysocky said.

Last year alone, the state of Florida lost $20 million in revenue from toll dodgers, enough money to build a whole new highway.
