They were called the underdogs, but today they're being called the champions.

The Dallas Mavericks pulled off a victory Sunday night, beating the Miami Heat and taking home the National Basketball Association championship for the first time in the Mavericks franchise history.

After acquiring three big players this season, the Heat received a lot of attention. Many sports analysts had said they were the shoo-in to win to championships.

But that didn't stop the Mavericks from fighting for the title. The Mavs won two games in a row to win the series in the 6th game. Their last win came on the road in front of Miami fans.

"This is a special team. I've leaned so much from these guys," Mavericks Head Coach Rick Carlisle said.
