Authorities said a suspicious vehicle parked outside the Pentagon after midnight belonged to Yonathan Melaku, 22, of Alexandria, Va.
Melaku fled authorities briefly before being caught after 1 a.m. Inside Arlington National Cemetery.
He was carrying a backpack containing what authorities said were suspicious materials. Police added that he was not cooperative when questioned.
Nothing suspicious was found in Melaku's car, a red 2011 Nissan, but they became alarmed by several items in his backpack, including a chemical compound that can be used in exloisuves.
Melaku is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Ethiopia. Melaku joined the Marine Corps Reserves in September 2007 and is currently listed as a lance corporal and motor vehicle operator, according to the FBI.
