The CBS News program "60 Minutes" recently featured a segment highlighting the growing number of homeless children in central Florida.
The heartbreaking story inspired David Uth, the pastor of First Baptist Orlando Church, to take steps to address the problem.
"I had a conversation with a teacher who knows some of these hotels where these children are staying," he said. "We have already identified some places that we can begin that work."
Uth asked members of his church to help him raise a million dollars to tackle the issue. In less than 24 hours, the 15,000-member congregation responded with an offering of $5.6 million.
"This weekend, to the glory of God, the First Baptist Church of Orlando, or those who call this home, gave $5.6 million," a stunned Uth reported. "Give him praise. Isn't that awesome?"
The church's leaders have started a "Love Orlando" website to document its new ministry to the homeless.
