For many women, Mother's Day is just another day. Whether they're single parents, military wives, or even widows -- they're often overlooked because there's no one at home to recognize their sacrifice.
Danette Crawford, founder of Joy Ministries and a single mom herself, wanted to find a way to lift these women up on Mother's Day.
"My heart really is for people across the nation and around the world to remember single moms and widows on Mother's Day," she said.
"Because you never know what the one next to you at church, the one that's working next to you, the desk next to you, what they're going through," she said.
"As we remember single moms, as we remember the widows -- you know that's true religion," she continued. "The Word says to encourage the oppressed, defend the calls of the fatherless, and plead the case of the widow. And that's the vision of our Mother's Day celebration."
Joy Ministries' Mother's Day Celebration rolls out the red carpet for single moms and widows. They come from all walks of life. Some are bussed in from housing projects, assisted living facilities, even from homeless and battered women's shelters.
But no matter where they come from, Crawford's ministry makes sure that they leave feeling like royalty.
"We radically bless them and they feel like, 'You know what, I'm the queen, and not only the queen for the day, but I am the queen.' And we teach them about being married to the king, because Jesus is the King of Kings," Crawford told CBN News.
The women get full service treatment, including a meal with their children, a Mother's Day gift, and a chance to meet other moms from their community.
At the end of the program, Crawford delivers a word of encouragement to help them take on the challenges that lie ahead.
"I have seen it. A lot of the women come out of their just overwhelmed. It's because they can see that someone actually cares. They're not alone," Crawford said.
"That's the good part about it," one mother said. "I don't have to cook that day. I live for that day. I love it."
