"Courageous," a new major motion picture from the Sherwood Baptist Church, made the top 10 at the box office this weekend.
The police drama stressing the importance of fatherhood took fifth place, grossing $8.8 million despite its limited release.
"It's not about making money with them. It's about making a difference," Rob Whitehurst, the film's production sound mixer, told the Kansas City Star.
"They (Sherwood Baptist) use movies as a way to get that message across globally," he added. "They know this is a medium that has the power to impact people way beyond the pews."
The film played in more than 1,100 theaters nationwide, while its competitors were showing on two to three times as many screens.
Sherwood Baptist is also responsible for producing the faith-based movies "Fireproof" and "Facing the Giants."
