A man shot and killed his wife in their home before opening fire at the Greater Faith Christian Church in Lakeland, Fla., this weekend.
Police say the suspect, former church member Jeremiah Fogel, targeted two pastors, wounding both during the incident.
Pastor William Boss and associate pastor Carl Stewart were both shot from behind and remain hospitalized. Boss sustained a gunshot to the head, and Stewart was shot three times in the back and ear.
Witnesses said Fogel, 57, then turned the gun on the rest of the congregation. He was tackled and subdued by church members Derek Foster and Cory Reid.
"There's no doubt in our mind that Derek Foster and Cory Reed are heroes. They stopped other people from being shot," Sheriff Grady Judd said.
"Of all the places you should be safe, you should be safe in a house of worship," Judd said. "Especially on a Sunday morning."
No one else in the church was hurt.
"The first thing in my mind was, 'I have to take this gun away,'" Foster said.
Fogel and his wife were former members of the church. They had recently left to start a ministry in their home.
He has been charged with first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder.
