Rob Bell has resigned from the church he and his wife founded 12 years ago to pursue other opportunities.

Bell is the author of "Love Wins," the controversial book about heaven and hell that came out earlier this year. His views angered some conservative evangelicals.

Bell's departure was announced on the website for the 3,000-member Mars Hill Bible Church in Grandville, Michigan, on Thursday.

"Feeling the call from God to pursue a growing number of strategic opportunities, our founding pastor Rob Bell has decided to leave Mars Hill in order to devote his full energy to sharing the message of God's love with a broader audience," the statement read.

No other information about Bell's departure was made public.

Bell plans on staying with the church through December as he teaches a series on Acts. Shane Hipps will take over Bell's position early next year.
