Prosecutors in Georgia say a murder investigation led to the discovery of a plot by four soldiers to attack two military bases.
The rogue soldiers are described as anarchists who formed their own militia and stockpiled $87,000 worth of guns and bomb-making materials.
Officials say they planned to bomb Fort Stewart in Georgia, as well as targets in Savannah and Washington state.
They even talked of killing the president and taking over the federal government.
Police say they went so far as to kill two people to protect their plan.
One of the soldiers confessed to manslaughter in the deaths of a former soldier and his girlfriend because they knew about the plot.
Neighbors in the military community say it's all just crazy and they're searching for reasons how this could have happened.
"I think they were on drugs or something but that's just my belief," one neighbor said. "Or just not in their right mind. They could have been deployed and messed up in the head or something."
The investigation is ongoing.
