The U.S. men's volleyball team was knocked out of their Olympic competition in the quarterfinals Wednesday. The defending Olympic champions lost their matchup with Italy in straight sets.
While the team is disappointed, one member said he gets his joy from God, not just from winning.
David Smith said over the years he has learned that his Christian life and his sports life don't have to be separate. That perspective has helped him focus on what matters most.
"It's been a huge learning experience of how to bring Christ into the gym with you, how to play with Christ, how to understand that peace, you know," Smith told CBN News partner in London, Athletes in Action.
"That's been a big thing for me this year," Smith said. "Just understanding that my joy and my peace is not revolving around my performance or how I do, or how I do compared to other people."
"My joy comes from playing well and playing a game that I love, that He created me to play," he said.
Smith said he tries to be an encourager and let the fruit of the Spirit shine through him to his teammates.
