Police in Los Angeles have arrested a suspect in a string of arson fires that has destroyed at least $3 million in property during four nights.
A total of 52 fires have been connected to the arson spree.
Harry Burkhart, 24, was pulled over by a reserve sheriff's deputy and arrested early Tuesday morning. He was later booked for investigation of arson of an inhabited dwelling.
Officials say Burhkart, a German national, told investigators, "I hate America." He was reportedly involved in a dispute with immigration officials over the status of his mother.
The suspect is not cooperating with authorities and they do not know how long he has been in the country.
Since the arrest, firefighters have not responded to any other suspicious fires. The investigation is continuing, but authorities haven't ruled out the possibility that others may be involved.
"We are very confident in this arrest, but we have a long way to go," Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck said.
Burkhart is being held with out bail in the Los Angeles County Jail.
