The Ohio Supreme Court has agreed to hear the case of a fired public school teacher accused of preaching Christianity in his classroom.
Last year, the Mount Vernon School Board dismissed John Freshwater, who taught 8th grade science, over accusations that he preached his Christian beliefs to students. Freshwater also kept a Bible on his desk.
Two lower courts previously upheld his dismissal. But Ohio's high court suggested it could be unconstitutional to fire someone without clear guidance on what teaching methods are acceptable.
The court also said Freshwater can argue it's unconstitutional to fire someone over the mere presence of a Bible in the classroom.
