Republican Gov. Jan Brewer has signed into law a measure preventing Planned Parenthood from accessing taxpayer money for non-abortion services in Arizona.
Already in the state, public money can't be used for abortions except to save the life of the mother. But pro-life legislators and other supporters of the new law say the measure is needed to make sure no public money indirectly supports abortion services.
Planned Parenthood Arizona says the funding ban will interrupt its preventive health care and family planning services. And that they will consider a legal challenge.
The new funding ban measure was one of several approved by Arizona's Republican-led Legislature. Recently lawmakers approved a bill to impose new restrictions on abortion, including a ban on terminating pregnancies starting at 20 weeks after conception.
