A terminally ill woman in New York City has decided to continue on life support after an appellate court granted her permission to disconnect her breathing tube.
Sungeun Grace Lee, 28, has an inoperable brain tumor and is paralyzed from the neck down. For more than a week, she'd insisted that her life had become unbearable and that she wanted to die.
Lee's father, Korean pastor Man Ho Lee, and his wife had fought the decision, saying her doctors pressured her to cease life support.
But on Friday a four-judge panel upheld a lower court ruling that Lee was mentally competent to make decisions regarding her health care.
Lee, however, had a change of heart on Saturday.
"When I asked her if she's doing this to make peace with her parents, she told me she was doing it to make peace with her parents and to make peace with God," her lawyer, David A. Smith, said.
"It looks like this will revert into something appropriately private," Smith told Newsday.
