Christian singer and former American Idol season 11 contestant Colton Dixon has released his first single titled, "Never Gone," via iTunes.

The 20-year-old from Murfreesboro,Tenn., had been singing the original song while traveling with the American Idol live tour this summer.  He has not been shy about sharing his Christian faith, which he said he does best through his music.

The upbeat song hit iTunes at midnight Tuesday and is quickly climbing the charts.

Within a few hours the song hit No. 1 on the iTunes Christian and Gospel charts while making a place for itself in the iTunes overall Top 40 category.

The 7th-place Idol contestant said he wrote the song in mid-June while working with Red Decibel production company founder Adam Watts.

Dixon, who recently signed with Sparrow Records, tweeted about his excitement.  He posted a smiling picture of himself and said, "This is how excited I am when I woke up to my first song on iTunes being #1 in Christian charts."

The song had audiences singing along with Dixon during the Idol tour.  Upon its release, "Never Gone" has been been receiving rave reviews from fans and celebrities alike within just a few hours of its debut on iTunes.
