Wildfires, like the ones currently burning out west, are proving to be costly for the country.
Over the past year more than a billion federal dollars have been spent battling fires across the west and Alaska.
Right now nearly 18,000 crews are fighting the 48 wildfires burning uncontained in western states.
In California one fire is threatening the outskirts of Yosemite National Park, forcing the evacuation of camps and nearby homes.
"it's terrifying how unpredictable it is and how fast it's moving. I don't even know what to think anymore really," Amelia Nickell, an evacuee, said.
For the first time in five years, the national inter-agency fire center has raised America's wildfire preparedness level to the highest tier.
