Maryland Nativity Scene Sparks Atheist Backlash

Ad Feedback

A Nativity scene in Hancock, Md., has sparked a backlash from atheists.

The scene first went up last year as a community effort by the Hancock Council of Churches. But this year, the Freedom From Religion Foundation complained to town officials about the display.

The town manager told the atheist organization the Nativity scene is not state-sponsored and that the Council of Churches met the requirements for displaying it.

A sign will be posted next to the Nativity scene saying the area is set aside for people exercising First Amendment rights and that the town is not affiliated with the display.
