Hundreds of firefighters are battling a 500-acre brush fire in Big Sur, Calif.
Big Sur is historically one of the wettest places in the state, but like the rest of California, the area is experiencing the driest calendar year on record.
The off-season fire has destroyed 15 homes so far and forced the evacuation of at least 100 people.
"I just haven't absorbed it all yet. I walked out the door to what I thought was a fire somewhere else and there were ashes and sparks going right by my front door," Volunteer Fire Brigade Chief Martha Karstens said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Meanwhile, the American Red Cross is providing water and food for those in need. Officials are hoping to have the fire fully contained by the end of the week.
