The death of a 29-year-old pregnant woman believed to be in the midst of a late-term abortion at 33 weeks is being investigated by the Maryland medical examiner and Montgomery County police.
Sidewalk counselors from the Germantown Pregnancy Resource Center say they spoke with the woman several times as she visited an abortion clinic.
Pro-life groups in Maryland are asking the state board of physicians to revoke the license of her doctor, Leroy Carhart. They're also asking the state to revoke his clinic's license.
"The avoidable death of this young woman dramatically illustrates the dangers of third trimester abortions that are done outside of the safety of obstetrical standards," Troy Newman, President of Operation Rescue and Pro-life Nation, told LifeNews.
"In 2005, Carhart was also involved in the death of Christin Gilbert, who died after a third trimester abortion in Wichita, Kansas," Newman continued. "If they do not, we can only expect Carhart and his associates to send more women to the morgue."
Nine states currently outlaw abortions at or after 20 weeks. Five states prohibit it in the third trimester, and seven states at 24 weeks gestation.
