President Barack Obama said Monday the nation is "kinder and gentler" thanks to former President George H.W. Bush.
Bush, sporting his now signature bold socks, joined Obama in the White House to honor the 5,000th winner of the Daily Point of Light award.
The award was created by the former president nearly 20 years ago to honor volunteerism.
President Obama said, although he's too humble to recognize it, the senior Bush's passion for service has strengthened the nation.
"Mister President, I'm one of millions of people who have been inspired by your passion and your commitment. You have helped so many Americans discover that they, too, have something to contribute, that they, too, have the power to make a difference," Obama said.
The recipients of today's award, Floyd Hammer and Kathy Hamilton, a retired couple from Iowa, were honored for delivering meals to hungry children in more than 15 countries.
