Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel says the Pentagon is working to extend benefits to the spouses of gay military members as soon as possible following the Supreme Court's rulings on same-sex marriage.
Those include health care, housing, and other federal benefits.
"Today's ruling helps ensure that all men and women who serve this country can be treated fairly ad equally, with the full dignity and respect they so richly deserve," Hagel said Wednesday.
The plan, which is scheduled to go into effect Oct. 1, could also allow the spouses of gay service members to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
The Pentagon estimates there are 18,000 same-sex couples in the military.
