When George Washington's Continental Army lost the Battle of Brooklyn Heights in August 1776 and then went on to lose control of Manhattan, it appeared the Revolutionary War might be over and the Americans defeated.
In the end, however, Washington's army made a comeback and was ultimately victorious.

But it wasn't because of the Continental Army's superior military might. It was because of a little known group of five men and one woman, known as the Culpeper Spy Ring.
