Group Sues over School Graduation at Chapel

A humanist group in South Carolina has filed a lawsuit to stop a public school from holding its 5th grade graduation ceremonies at a Christian university.

The American Humanist Association wants to stop Mountain View Elementary School from holding future ceremonies in a chapel at a university affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

It also seeks to stop school-sponsored prayer at future events.

The school district spokesman says the group's position "would require the district to demonstrate hostility, not neutrality, toward religion, which is a violation of the First Amendment."
