Texas Nat'l Guard Won't File Gay Marriage Benefits

The Texas National Guard will not provide benefits to same-sex couples.

Tuesday was the first day same-sex married couples could apply for federal benefits.

Maj. Gen. John Nichols, commanding general of the Texas Military Forces, says Texas law defines marriage as between a man and woman.

Consequently, gay couples in Texas will not be able to enroll for the benefits at the five facilities funded by the state.

The general says they can still go to one of the 20 federal installations located across the state to file for the benefits.
