Feds Investigate Deadly California Bus Collision
Federal authorities are taking over the investigation of a tragic accident in California.
On Thursday afternoon, a bus carrying high school students to a preview day at Humboldt State University crashed head on with a FedEx truck that crossed the median.
The vehicles burst into flames killing at least 10 people, including the drivers of the bus and the truck.
Lacey Heitman, of the California Highway Patrol, said the bus "was transporting students from the Los Angeles Unified School District and they were en route to Humboldt. That's as much as we know."
Officials are working to identify the victims from the bus, which carried between 44 and 48 students, four chaperones and the driver.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the tragic accident on I-5 in California," Bonnie Kourvelas, a FedEx spokeswoman, said in a statement Thursday night. "We are cooperating fully with authorities as they investigate."
Meanwhile, California Gov. Jerry Brown offered his condolences to the families of those killed in Thursday's crash.
"Anne and I extend our heartfelt and deep sympathies to the families, friends and loved ones of those who died in the tragic accident near Orland this evening," NBC News quoted Brown.
"As we mourn the loss of those who died, we join all Californians in expressing our gratitude for the tireless work of the Red Cross and emergency personnel who responded bravely to this terrible tragedy," he added.
