New York City's police department is shutting down a controversial unit dedicated to infiltrating Muslim communities.
Muslim groups and civil liberties advocates applauded the decision.
The demographics unit, created with the help of the CIA, gathered information in the places where Muslims lived, shopped, worked, and prayed by placing informants in Muslim student groups and mosques where informants monitored sermons.
The unit also catalogued Muslims in New York who adopted new, Americanized surnames.
The program is the subject of two federal lawsuits.
