A South Carolina education committee wants high school students to question evolution.

On Monday, the state's Education Oversight Committee voted 7 to 4 in favor of biology standards that require students to use scientific evidence to both support and discredit natural selection.

Republican state Sen. Mike Fair, R-Greenville, said natural selection should not be taught as fact.

But a fellow committee member, Barbara Hairfield, said she's concerned the recommended change borders on teaching religion.

The recommendation will go back to the South Carolina Board of Education for review. The committee and board must agree before any standards can be changed.
