By the year 2018 the government will require new cars to be built with rear-view cameras.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the rule will apply to all cars under 10,000 pounds, including SUVs and minivans, as well as some small trucks and buses.

Backup accidents cause an average of 210 deaths a year, and children under the age of 5 account for 31 percent of those deaths.

At least 15,000 injuries are attributed to backup accidents.

"Safety is our highest priority, and we are committed to protecting the most vulnerable victims of backover accidents-our children and seniors," Forbes quoted Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

"As a father, I can only imagine how heart wrenching these types of accidents can be for families," he said. "But we hope that today's rule will serve as a significant step toward reducing these tragic accidents."

The NHTSA estimates the new rear visibility standards will save between 13 to 15 lives per year and prevent as many as 1,125 injuries
