In Utah, a newborn baby girl is in extremely critical condition after being found in a garbage can.

"It was transported in critical condition and now it's in extremely critical condition and it's been described as really fighting for the infant's life," Salt Lake City Sheriff Jim Winder said.

A neighborhood resident found the baby in her trash with the umbilical cord still attached.

"They told me they found a baby out of the garbage can. I don't even talk, I just... shocked," Adora Nemitz, a neighbor of the woman who found the baby, said.

Police arrested and are questioning the 24-year-old unidentified mother.

"The potential charges could be child abuse and, God forbid, if child passes away it could be child homicide," Winder said.

Officials say the baby could have been dropped off at a hospital without any consequences.
