Rickey Waggoner was only a few pages from death early Tuesday morning. The Dayton, Ohio, bus driver is crediting his Bible for saving his life in a gang-related shooting.

Waggoner, 49, had stopped to fix a mechanical problem at 5:30 a.m., when three teenagers shot him twice in the chest and once in the leg.

Waggoner told a local news team the last thing he heard one of the attackers say, "If you want to be all the way in the club, you have to kill the polar bear."

But "The Message" devotional Bible in Waggoner's front shirt pocket stopped the bullets from piercing his body.

After fighting off the teen assailants, Waggoner was able to get his bus to a nearby station and radio for help. He was still in the driver's seat when police arrived.

"There was obviously some kind of intervention involved in this incident because he probably should not be here," one officer said.

Waggoner was taken to Miami Valley Hospital. His condition has not been released.
