The U.S. Air Force is investigating dozens of officers accused of cheating on a nuclear proficiency exam.

The case involves 34 officers responsible for handling nuclear weapons at Malmstrom Air Force base in Montana.

The officers involved have been charged, removed from their posts, and have had their security clearances suspended.

Military officials said some of the officers texted answers back and forth on the routine test, while others knew about the cheating but did nothing to stop it.

The episode was uncovered during a separate drug investigation. Officials said it is possibly the largest breach of integrity in the nuclear force.

"This is absolutely unacceptable behavior and it is completely contrary to our core values in the Air Force," Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James said.

"There is no room for mistakes with nuclear weapons," retired Col. Steve Ganyard, former deputy assistant secretary of state, said.

Now all 600 officers in the nation's missile launch program are being retested.
