Oscar Nomination Revoked for Faith-Based Song

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has rescinded its Oscar nomination for a song in the faith-based film, "Alone But Not Alone."

Christian author and speaker Joni Eareckson Tada performs the song, named the same as the movie title.

Now the Academy is doing an about-face, saying composer Bruce Broughton used his influence as a former Academy governor to get the nomination.

Broughton said all he did was send an email asking others to consider the song.

"I didn't ask anybody to vote for it. I didn't do any campaigning for the film. I didn't do anything I didn't read in the rules, frankly," Broughton said.

The Academy president said sending an email crossed the line because it gives the appearance of an unfair advantage. Broughton said that's ridiculous.

"If I learned how to game the system, I probably would have had a nomination before this," he said. "The last nomination I had was 30 years ago."

Other members of the Academy, including well-known film composer Hans Zimmer, called the ruling unfair.
