Emmy-winning actress Ann B. Davis, best known for her role as the devoted maid Alice Nelson of "The Brady Bunch," passed away Sunday at the age of 88.

Bill Frey, a retired bishop and longtime friend of Davis, says she died one day after falling at her San Antonio, Texas, home. He said she suffered a subdural hematoma and never regained consciousness.

In 1993, she told the Associated Press she was born again.

"It (Salvation) changed my whole life for the better...I spent alot of time giving Christian witness all over the country to church groups and stuff," Davis said.

"I'm convinced we all have a God-shaped space in us, and until we fill that space with God, we'll never know what it is to be whole," she told People.

Actress Florence Henderson, who played mom Carol Brady, said she was devastated to learn of Davis' death Sunday.

"I am so shocked and sad to learn that my dear friend and colleague, Ann B. Davis, died today," Henderson said in a Facebook post. "I spoke with her a couple of months ago and she was doing great!"

Frey said many people over the years told Davis they feel like they were raised by her character.

"'Look how well you turned out,'" she would reply, according to Frey.

Davis told People, "All of us wish we had an Alice. I wish I had an Alice."
