Record high numbers of homeless people are seeking shelter in New York City.

The Coalition For The Homeless reports nearly 54,000 people stayed in overnight shelters in January, the highest number ever recorded.

More than 22,000 of those were children.

On average, homeless families in New York City will stay in a shelter for almost 15 months.
