Some Democrats are fighting back against new Obama administration proposals on coal-fired power plants.

Seven Democratic senators have called on the president to scale back his proposals.

"We are committed to improving air quality; however, the emissions standards in the proposed rule are not based on technology that has been adequately demonstrated on a commercial scale," they said in a letter to the president.

The senators recommended Obama evaluate "more appropriate ways to regulate emissions."

Meanwhile, electricity prices could rise as coal-fired plants shut down in response to environmental regulations and economic forces.

Coal produces 40 percent of the nation's electricity, more than any other fuel. The ample supply cheap coal helps keep energy prices level and power flowing even when demand spikes.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration predicts prices will rise to almost three percent by the end of the year.
